Patriotism, nationalism constitution

Recently there has been a great deal of debate about the term “nation”: whether or not Catalonia is a nation, whether or not the new Statute should recognise this country’s nation status, etc. There has been a great deal of discussion about nation and nationality and national and national entity and historic nation, about national symbols, etc.

This is not an easy debate for Catalans. Not merely for the fierce opposition to it from the rest of Spain but because – like it or not – the call for Catalonia’s recognition as a nation is a nationalist philosophy and policy. Here and elsewhere in Europe there is much debate, confusion and insincerity surrounding the concept of nationalism. This has also give rise to many complexes.

The not culture in an italian way

It is not only in Catalonia that the “not culture” delays a lot or simply does impossible the progress of the country. In Italy they say “il partito del non fare”, the party of the not to do. There it is how the Corriere della Sera echoed it:

From all the news of the last week, we have chosed the next ones:

The American Congress frustrates the operation of purchasing the terminals of six harbours as a part of a business of the United Arab Emirates.

Despite that the Emirates are an ally of the United States in the fight against the terrorism, the political and nationalist aspects have prevailed on the strictly business, thing that has avoided to the company that made the best offer to controll the harbours.

Great Britain and the childl poverty.

One out of each four British children is officially poor, the double than in Germany and five times more than in Denmark.  Blair has managed to reduce the poverty and also the childlike, but is still far from the goals he proposed. It is so negative for Great Britain in comparison with orther European countries, in other themes very prosperous.

High abstention to the elections of the principal to the Catalonian public universities.

In the most recent election, in the UPF, the participation has been of the 18,47%.  Also in the other Universities there was a high level of abstention. It seems clear that this elective procedure is not the best solution, as is deduced of the little interest that causes the system.

TVE announces the dismissal of 3.133 workers, the 39% of the staff.

The plan presented by the SEPI (State Societyof Industrial Participations) to the UGT and CCOO representatives foresees this important reduction with drops negotiated and early retirements.  The RTVE debt is of 7.551 million euro (more than one trillion of the old pesetas).  The central government wants to end up with this public entity working way, has been bad managed and has not adapted to the changing realities.

Greenspan writes his memories

For eighteen years was the Federal Reserve president and he has compromised with the Penguin Press editorial to publish his memories.  The contract is of 7,15 million euro, quantity only surpassed recently by the work My Life of the former president Clinton, that charged ten million dollars.  It is said that, for the book edition, Greenspan will include the contribution of one of the best journalists of The Wall Street Journal.

Less farmers, but richer.

Since 1986 the agrarian population in Spain has been reduced halfway but the income has benn duplicated.  The main driving force has been the PAC (Political Agrarian Common) of the EU.  The high prices of the PAC, according to La Caixa Service of Studies, are responsible for the 25% of the total of the agrarian income, a percentage that is elevated at 50% with the perception of indirect aids (prices subsidized of the water, fuels, etc.)  The aids of the PAC will be reduced from the 2007.

The Spain of the penguins

Due to his activity as La Vanguardia journalist in Madrid, Enric Juliana presents a chronicle of the spanish political panorama from theM. The several events in the Spanish politics have been so important that their meaning and appraisal escapes many citizens, that react or well with a distancing of the politics, or well being left to carry toward emotional positions that only contributes to complicate the situation. It does lack, therefore, that someone with a good information and with a serene intelligence and objective know to analyze the facts. The author has these qualities and by this, offers some analysis and brave and clear reflections about themes as hard as: the journalism of intoxication; the Popular Party strategy and the reaction of his leaders; the critical retreat of Aznar; the figure of Rodríguez Zapatero; the new actors of the Catalonian politics and the new Statute; the territorial system of other communities. Juliana offers an antidote against the spanish alarmism that some preach with more deceit and grudge that not by a proclaimed and disinterested love to the country.
