Pride or unease

Last week Barcelona received a visit from Mr Mario Monti, one of the leading Italian economists. In addition to being a member of the European commission in Brussels, he was especially recognised for his objectivity and technical expertise, and for the way he directed the commission’s sensitive remit on competition. Furthermore, while he was in Brussels, Monti proved to be a good friend of Catalonia.

Catalonia: "memory-country or fiction-country in the globalization?"

The south of Europe has been configured, as Josep Lluís Sert wrote, as "a big region, unique in the world, with its own particular characteristics, which facilitate and stimulate the exchange of people and civilizations", to the extent that, as Paul Válery wrote, it has become an authentic "machine of creation of civilization", favoring the constitution of some of the most important universal ideals of the Humanity, either in the political area (democracy), legal (human rights), religions (monotheism) or science (rational thought). It has been so important that still today it is a pole of attraction for its creative intensity as well as for its deep issues

An "Angela" for the European Union?

It is not to discover a new thing if we state that the European Union is found in one of the most delicate moments since the constituent signature of the Treaty of Rome, next year it will be the fifty anniversary.

TV3, Rocío and the point of view

A television, a radio, a journal, are essentially a point of view: a place from where the world is looked at, a specific look. A new media -public or private- appears when it is considered that there is a point of view that exists in the society and that it does not have informative expression. TV3 was created so that there was television set in Catalan, is true.

On the editorial "On questions of population (several points for reflection)

On this editorial, I remember throughout the eighties, two repeated calls of the president Pujol: to contribute to the growth of the Catalan demography and to be prepared for the massive migrations from the north of Africa. The Spanish general answer to the first call was of mockery, even with comparisons with the Franco birth polices named The great family. On the second subject few political forces had the prospective vision to get advanced to the current drama, now tragic and routine. The projection of Morocco asked for the president was not listened in Madrid. The duties were not done and now we are paying the consequences. In Catalunya, we have often noticed Sweden as model of society but we have not copied that much their proactive disposition and capacity of teamwork. After all this should remind us the sentence "the horizon of the ruler is the legislature; but the horizon of the stateman, should be the next generation".

On the article "It does not lack petroleum in the world"

If feel so disappointed with the opinion of the writter when she states that “Petroleum is not finishing”. The only sentence that she could add to justify her position is to say that Petroleum will not finish soon. We can increase our capacity to refine it, and probably we will have the capacity to influence on its prize now, but not in a few years. In the next years we will live the scenaryf the named peak oil, which is the moment in which the demand for oil will surpass the offer. There are several different predictions on what can occur, but I will not discuss on uncertain events. What I can say is that now we extract much more oil than what we discover (sources of the International Agency of the Energy). This fact happens because in the past we discovered more oil sources than waht we extracted. Lets say then than in these moments, the world works thanks to the discoveries of previous years and if we look at the trend, which seems reliable enough, we arrive at the conclusion that in less than 50 years, the oil will be finished.

The Japanese government has approved a reform of the law of urban development planning that will frobid the construction of large commercial centres–of more than 10.000 m²– in the peripheries of the cities, with the intention to avoid the depopulation of the cities and to revitalize the small commerce.  These norms will be stablished in two years. The voice of the experience

The young journalist Antoni Aira presents some interviews to ten older personages, that have lived key moments of our history. In the interviews, they explain their experiences and they think on of the present time themes. The personages are: Josep Maria Ainaud, Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit, Josep Maria Ballarin, Jordi Bonet, Helena Cambó, Teodor Garriga, Montserrat Moner, Lluís Maria Pugès, Josep Maria Puig Salellas, Ramon Trias. Aira believes that, now that the youths demand the right to be listened and not to be forgotten, it is also fair to let the older people speak, to take care of the capital of the experience of older generations, to promote the dialogue among generations and to surpass the mutual ignorance. Because the speech of the greater people is full of responsibility, of effort, of fight and of loyalties, values so necessary now and before. As the President Pujol says in the prologue: “A book that helps to know what we have been, what we are and what we should be”.

Bruegel

Bruegel is a new think tank created in Brussels last year with the support of the European government and several corporations, dedicated to the analysis of the international economy. Financed with private and public funds, it intends to know closely the economic challenges and the responsibilities that has to assume Europe in the globalization. While the bureau, presided by the European excomisioner Mario Monti, puts the up-to-date questions on the table, the team of investigators takes charge of analyzing them. It is not politically positioned and it does not takes part on institutional decisions.
