The Statute will not be sufficient (2)

Some months ago I wrote an article with the same title for Avui. I said that assuming the Statute was approved (which was uncertain at that time) and that is was positive, exactly as it was approved in the Catalan Parliament on September 30 2005, it would be insufficient to give Catalonia a strong and effective momentum.

I believe that what I said then is even more accurate now.

God's caricatures

When Samuel P. Huntington explained his theory of the collision of civilizations, now exactly ten years ago, neither defenders neither critics of his thesis could predict, not even imagine since their ideas laboratories, many of the events occurred since then from now on. Facts that, at least, have gone putting on the table some of the forecasts that the American north political scientist had viewed in his controversial trial of the 1996.

Hamas. The benefit of the doubt

The presence of Hamas in Palestine frightens a lot more than threatens the fragile, very fragile , political stability of the Near East. What has mobilized to the democratic world against an Islamic government are the radical principles that has gone exhibiting Hamas along its existence, not the Palestinian power.

The education in crisis. The only exit?

Recently, there have been published many articles on education in press, radio or television and also debates on education are promoted by diverse institutions. They all complain of the lack of the formation of our young generations. Several studies indicate that the level of our youyh -and of the not so young, some of them already they are tecahers– is so poor.

About the editorial "Returning from the north"

I have read Jordi Pujol's analysis on welfare state in the scandinavian countries. Sure that these countries, once more, show new ways to defend the welfare state, with a pragmatism so far away of every ideology.

Yearly Inflation. 4.2% in Spain, the highest since the year 2002, worse still in Catalunya,4.8. The average of the euro zone, 2.2. Bad news for the economy in general, competitiveness is lost and the citizens see how their purchasing power diminish, especially those retired.

Non worker taxes drip in Catalunya and Spain in the year 2005. More work in the services sector, in the construction and in the agriculture. On the other hand, the industry, of so much importance in Catalunya, loses 12000 workers.

Medical. The Health Department of the Generalitat does not find doctors to cover the vacancies in Lleida, the Pyrenee and the lands of the Ebre. Continues with storng the “numerus clausus” in the catalan universities

Immigration. Catalunya has already 11,4% of recent immigrants, a total of 798 904 people. The year 2005 they were 156 058 new people registered. The increasing rates in Spain, the most important in Europe, are attributed to the tolernace environment with the illegals and to the confidence of future regulations.

Nuclear energy. Mr. Almunia, the European Commissioner, asks to reconsider the nuclear option given the unknown future and the price of the petroleum. Also the presidentof the United States, in the recent speech of the state of the Union, insists on the need to promote other non-petrolific energies, especially the nuclear one.

Valencian statute. The socialist and popular party of Valencia have agreed to introduce in the new statute the term “Valencian language”. It supposes the political will to work for the linguistic segregation.

A book on civism

In 1998, the professor of Political and Moral Philosophy, V. Camps, and the professor of Sociology, S. Giner, published this “Manual of public-spiritedness”. A rigorous, didactic and clear text on the public-spiritedness as ethics. After diverse reprints, now is published with up-to-date themes as the public-spiritedness and the violence and the public-spiritedness in the urban context. The authors support their exposition in the modern and classical philosophers, from whom they extract and deduce well easy principles to understand, but so difficult to apply in the daily life. That the good education is the expression of the respect to the person and to the dignity of every human being, that the rights always also imply obligations, that public-spiritedness and democracy are inseparable, that the democracy needs responsible and active citizens, that there are circumstances in which to say what is not a virtue, or that what truly causes respect to the others (this “other” so invoked and often forgotten) is the respect to ourselves. Anyways, some reflections and proposals due to a happy intellectual contribution, of absolutely recommendable reading.
