What will remain of the Generalitat?

For some time a lively debate has been underway surrounding the territorial organisation of Catalonia. Above all surrounding the questions of the vegueries and the metropolitan area of Barcelona, but on the rebound the question of the provinces, the provincial councils and consells comarcals has also come to the fore. This subject is giving rise to much heated debate and tension across the country, besides coming at a time of deep disquiet, especially economic, in many a local council. On the other hand, it also raises questions of the real e reasons behind this or that party’s interest in the metropolitan body or in the configuration of the vegueries, and so forth. But this editorial does not directly address this issue.

Specifically today I would like to speak about the need to keep the idea of “the West”—a functioning West—alive; about whether the United States is capable of performing the task of leadership alone, or almost alone; about what Europe’s real possibilities are; about the current state of relations between Europe and the United States; about Europe’s demographic problems, and the issue of identity in general; about the process of de-Occidentalization going on in the world; about the West’s raison d’être as an economic and military power, and also as an ideological one, by which I mean, as the embodiment of a set of values and as a model for society, and hence of the need for a strengthened and functioning West.
