Home > Jordi Pujol > Ideologue > International projection International projection according to Jordi PujolThe international projection of Catalonia is necessary if the country is to be known and is to function as a part of this world. The world for Catalans must be the whole world. The opening begins in Europe. To look to Europe is to return home. Catalonia was born as a people and a nation 1,200 years ago, as a region bordering Charlemagne's empire. Catalonia is the only nation of Spain to have been come into being through a European connection, and not as an autochthonous reaction designed to provide historical legitimacy against the Moors. ![]() In part we continue to be children of CharlemagneCatalonia has always preserved this union with the heart of Europe. This has been complemented by another great and decisive component of the idea and reality of Europe: the Mediterranean. Catalonia has not only been the beachhead of Europeanism in Spain, it has also been Spain's beachhead within Europe, Spain's most solid bond with Europe. Being a European patriot means believing in freedom, modernity, progress, plurality and democracy. It implies the coexistence of languages and peoples. European regionalism does not entail any attack on current statesThe States must remain and be respected, although they must also recognise the regions and devolve powers so that these regions develop their own role and initiative. The regions must have direct access to Europe. Superstructures are useful when they support something living. Regional awareness must thus be strong and effective and must act in accordance with efficiency, modernity and a vision of the whole. |
